She is not a vegetable. She can breathe on her own, and she responds to people
and objects. She has never had any rehabilatation because her jackass husband
will not allow it. Have you seen the video? I encourage everyone to look at it
before you make a decision.

Russell, you are a vegetable and your plug should be pulled, see if you can
pull it yourself and do the would a favor and stop taking up air that a thinking
person could be using.

Unless you have worked with people in long term care that have massive insults
to their brain...shut up.You may have your opinion but it is an emotional
one,not an informed one.I have taken care of children with no brain, just a brain
stem. You could hold a flash light near their skull and see light on the other
side. These kids cried, blinked, had eye and body movement, appeared to sleep and to
the uninformed they looked normal.Yet nature played a cruel trick and left them
without the part that gives us personality and makes us who we are.She is the
same.We see what we want to see and the most unselfish thing to do is let her
go.People do not want to go throught the grieving process and hang on to every
little thing. Her parents need to make the most magnanimous unselfish decision
they may ever make and let her go.That is the true sign of unending love.Loving
her enough to let her go.

I just think there should have been more physicians allowed in to evaluate
more. If there is truly no hope for this woman, then I agree with you 100130.
I don't agree with starving her to death. Can anyone agree with that method of
death?
Anonymous Report This Comment Date: March 24, 2005 06:24AM
Medicine has surpassed its self.We can do alot to you but not alot for you.We
try to keep everyone alive no matter what the problem is or quality their life
is.We do not believe in euthanasia which means good death. The humane way would
be to sedate while this process is going on.People who have been deprived of
food and or water through war or other emergent situations have said that it
isn't painful. The body and mind work to make the process easy, releasing
endorphins to ease the transition from life to death. She has no function except
her brain stem so this would be very easy. Her Cat Scan showed empty space or
just darkened areas where her brain had been.It has died and atrophied. This is
concrete proof of the loss of the part of her brain that made her who she used
to be.Sedate her if you think she feels pain but she needs to be let to die.She
basically is like a big doll that her parents pose, dress and play with. They
bring her balloons and gifts that you would give a small child. She was a
woman, let her return to that and die with dignity.
Anonymous Report This Comment Date: March 24, 2005 07:15AM
What they need to do is put her to sleep with some drug. They do it for dogs
that are beyond saving, and almost everyone loves dogs. Put criminals to death a
nicer way then innocent people. I'm going off on a tangent here but we should
bring back the electric chair.
Anonymous Report This Comment Date: March 24, 2005 07:42AM
Why Can't She be Allowed to Die??
We are not meant to live as she lives, we are meant to die as she will die. It
is God's wish, we have interfered with it. She has been kept in purgatory for
too long, let her feel the peace of leaving this world.

I agree entirely with 100130. The fact the parents are trying to keep her
"alive" in this state is simply an act of pure selfishness. Let her go
with dignity, mourn the child you've lost, and deal with it in a proper fashion.
Keeping her alive in this manner is doing nothing to help her.

The government can't seem to fix the health care problem for millions. But they
are able to stop the country for just one person? They can also fix baseball? Is
there still a war going on? Do we have security problems?
Anonymous Report This Comment Date: March 24, 2005 03:27PM
I knew when this was posted alot of people would post a comment. Think about
both sides. First you have the side to preserve life, which is a good thing,
especially since we have the technology to do it. Love is what leaves people
hoping for positive results. I was reading where a girl in a comma for 20 years
suddendly snapped out of it. I feel the brain does regenerate sometimes, and yes
it does take time. I feel her parants should have aright to keep her alive if
they so desire. As for her husband, well, he has given up on her and said she
would never want to be kept alive artifically, but no one knows for sure. He
just wants her to die so he can get it on with his new love. Well, it seems to
me, a bill should be brought before the house to allow a divorce under certain
circumstances, with this being one of those. As for a right to die, does that
rule out suicide? As with the shooter at that small school in Minnesota. I think
not. Well consider this, was the doctor of death so far wrong that he helped
people who sufferd to end their suffering. If this applies to this poor lady,
would not a leathal injection be better than to let her dehydrate? This country
is so screwed upi it is pitiful. I think it is time we keep our noses out of the
rest of the world and contend with the problems we have in this country. In
closing, they have kept her alive for 15 years, what is a few more. Give her a
chance.

me alive.

If she has not got any better in 15 years then think if you can ass holes/she
is not getting better/let her die/give her peace/respect what would probably be
her wish's/now anyway it goes they will remember her like she is now/I would
have rather remembered her as she was 15 years ago and to have let her die
then/her folks are cruel/it's not love anymore/ it's more like a guilt trip for
past mistakes.

blood supply,he is engaged to be married and has a child by his girlfriend. The
money he won with 2 lawsuits has almost been spent(attorneys fees)the
strangulation marks were on terri's neck which makes you wonder attempted
murder(no charges filed)

It is a terribly sad situation to be sure. I do find it not just odd but quite
unsettleing that virtually all branches on all levels are bringing thier
business to a screeching halt to to attempt to "save" one person who
has existed in a vegitative state for over 15 years while at the same time
thousands of fully functional people (including children) die every day who
might have had a chance if they had access to proper medical care.
Folks, the sad truth is Terri died 15 years ago. Her body has been kept
"alive" since 1990. This whole episode is far more about political
posturing and media ratings over the importance of whether one woman is let go.
Dosen't anyone find it just a wee bit odd and hypocritical that most of the
people making such a big show out of keeping terri "alive" are so
religious. Why are they afraid and sad of letting Terri go to meet her maker? It
makes no sense. People die...that is reality.
P.S. While there is much I would/could write about the legal and governmental
aspects of this situation, I just don't have time right now. But for you, George
W. Bush and your fans...I will now hold you responsible for halting whatever you
are doing and working to save ANYONE and EVERYONE in the United States (yes even
black and brown people) who might die if not for a medical procedure that is not
forthcoming. You have now established a precident: The "culture of
life" trumps all. So get to it. Excuses will not be accepted...if it is
applies to a woman who has been virtually brain-dead for 15 years, then it
applies to ALL. Any deviation from this principle will render you and yours as
absolute hypocrites forever. Get ready for the non-stop prayer vigils, media
exposure for the horribly diseased and dying. You made your bed now lie in
it.
If that sound insincere, cruel or cynical then why??? is all I can ask. All
must be saved no matter what the costs or legal ramifications. I am only going
by his supposed values. I now fully expect...no demand that every seriously ill
or injured child to have his or her fate be dealt with PERSONALLY by all
branches of the federal government. Anything less makes a liar and a hypocrite
out of all who have worked so hard on behalf of this poor, exploited soul: Terri
Schiavo.
Hey, they set the standard, not me. We must hold them to it.

Shannon, don't be so fucking hysterical - you never knew her either. Starving
her was the only legal way to let her go. If you give someone a drug overdose
you are actively killing them. Does "death by lethal injection" sound
familiar to you? She was unable to feed herself, and so was given nutrition as
part of her care. Withdrawl of care is valid - homocide is not. The law is an
ass - but it's the best ass we've got...
