an extremely rare military artefact from Ancient China.
This superb Iron Long Sword dates to Han Dynasty China, around 200 AD. This is a
Single Edged Weapon complete with circular Loop Pommel and Handle. Mounted on a
wooden frame dressed with Canvas. Length of Sword: 33 1/4 inches.
Han Dynasty Warfare: The Han Dynasty was a very successful period of Chinese
history characterised by military success as well as cultural prosperity.
Its success was probably due to its near universal military conscription policy.
During the Han, all men had military obligations: Conscription was universal;
soldiers were required to train for 1 year and serve for a further year.
Although they were dismissed at 2 years, they were recalled when necessary. The
military were classified into infantry, cavalry, and navy. There were a handful
of governors in the military, who had civil as well as military authority. Some
conscribed men served in the imperial capital, whilst others were sent to defend
the Great Wall. Most Han soldiers fought as spear bearing infantry, swordsmen
per se being infrequent. Later on in the Han Dynasty however, professional
Cavalry were utilized to fight the Xiongnu in the North.
