I wonder if perhaps the Mayan calender is correct. How can 2013 arrive without Dick Clark?

I hope I make it as long as he did. He was in better shape for the last 10 years than I am now and looked 30 years younger.

I appreciate your thoughts J,
but in my country we use other methods to deal with
criminals which have a proven result that not everyone needs to carry a firearm.

It's a problem with the US constitution that will most probably never be changed,
too late for that, which gives people like Clark and Heston free reign to continue
to "feed the beast".

Just expressing my thoughts.

Could you enlighten us on your other methods of dealing with violent crime without using guns while you await the cops?

Maybe he would play dead like you should do if a bear attacks.

Alternatives:
[*] Laws and controls that mean the rapist is unlikely to be carrying a gun
[*] A sturdy lock on the door
    [*] Self defense classes
[*] A bat or the like within easy reach
    [*] A taser
    [*] Etc.

I am very well aware that number 1 above is not going to happen in the US so for most of you a gun for defense is the logical choice.

Actually there are plenty of laws in the US designed to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. They just don't work that well because criminals break them.

When someone around here, meaning in Fort Myers, the nearest large metropolitan area, is injured or killed with a gun, an amazing amount of the time the picture of the suspect is an old mugshot and very often so is that of the victim. Other than that, I'll refrain from making a further comment about those involved as it might seem racist.

Hence why I also said "...and controls...". It is easier to keep hand guns out of NZ as it is an island nation with tight border controls. It's different in the US as even if one state does have strict laws there is no border control between states so it can be easier to get a gun in another state and then just take it home.

It's not racist to observe that the majority of violent crime is committed by one particular race. It becomes racist if you assume that a person is violent simply because they are one of that particular race.

Gun control laws might insure the rapist doesn't have a gun but it does not ensure he doesn't have a knife. There are many other things a criminal can use against another person other than guns. Should women carry around ball bats everywhere they go? Tasers are only effective if you can get close enough to use it and by that time the knife is at her throat. I would rather my daughter shoot someone approaching her with knife in hand.

In the politically correct stae of the U.S. today,GAK,any mention of race is often taken to be a racist remark if it's in regard to something done wrong, or even mentioning that you disagree with someone of another race with no racial connotations at all is often interpreted as being racist. Just yesterday I said something on facebook about how ridiculous it is that Michelle Obama was in a town near here asking $1000 to attend a dinner with her and $4000 to have a photo taken with her, nothing to do with race whatsoever, and an elderly liberal I know just had to say he thinks the Obamas are the subject of some deep seated racial predjudice. I'm sure that in some corners they are but my statement goes for anyone doing the same as Mrs. Obama, nobody's worth that, but because I named her it was automatically assumed that I was objecting because of her race.

Rasist schmasist, PC schmeecie. Do we not think for ourselves? The media is a boatload of crap and is doing more to polarize this country than any other force. Bubble headed bleach blond comes on at five... Love that song smiling
smiley Nobody's right if everybody's wrong... love that one too. It hasn't really changed, it only appears to because the flow of (mis)information has increased vastly. The lies spread faster than ever now.

I will stop being racist when it is pointed out publicly that blacks are just as racist and they stop thinking I owe them something for slavery.
