This was a WW-II French cruiser refurbished in the U.S. The 'Startle' or 'Razzle-Dazzle' camouflage patterns were less stealth than confusion. Seen through a periscope lens of a U-Boat or else from the air this warship could appear to be almost anything other than what it really was.
