I dunno...maybe it's like that convergence or coincidence stuff the military keeps blowing money on.
It also makes you wonder why PJ was hanging on for so long when his bod was obviously choosing an exit strategy. Maybe PJ was thinking, all the while he held to that cruciform staff... "Please Lord, not that asshole."
