The people who do that say that their vehicle is too big for a regular parking
space and they don't want their doors dinged.
Taking up two spaces intentionally -- that's what actually gets their vehicles
damaged.

Yank tanks. There's a less polite description. A lot of people want the
decision to allow them here in Australia undone, they've led to an dramatic
increase in children being run over, sometimes in their own driveways, as they
couldn't be seen. The number of deaths has jumped.
